Florida Company Leverages New Technology to Drive Down Housing Costs

In the aftermath of devastating natural disasters, rebuilding homes can often feel like an uphill battle. From the California wildfires that destroyed over 16,000 homes in January to the relentless hurricanes and flooding that frequently plague coastal communities, the cost and time required to rebuild can be overwhelming. But one Florida company, Renco, is using innovative technology to offer a new solution that promises faster, more affordable construction without compromising on safety, durability, or long-term resilience.

A New Approach to Construction

Renco’s groundbreaking approach is inspired by something most of us know well: Lego bricks. The company has developed a composite material made from glass, recycled plastic, and other durable materials, designed to build homes faster and more efficiently than traditional methods. Like Legos, the bricks are interlocking, offering a high level of internal strength. What makes this approach truly revolutionary is the technology’s ability to endure extreme weather conditions, such as Category 5 hurricanes, while also being fire- and water-resistant.

While the material itself might be more expensive than traditional bricks or wood, the company’s ability to streamline the construction process has resulted in significant cost savings. By reducing the number of workers needed and shortening the overall build time, Renco has been able to lower the cost of building homes by as much as 20%. This offers a major advantage in the face of rising construction costs—particularly with the recent 47% increase in the cost of home building materials since 2016.

A Faster, More Cost-Effective Solution

Renco’s unique composite bricks are not just durable—they’re also incredibly efficient to use. The company can produce as many as 16 homes a day in its Jupiter, Florida factory. By being able to use less skilled labor and reducing the time needed for construction, Renco has developed a solution that is quicker and less expensive than traditional building methods.

Even with a higher initial cost for the composite bricks, the savings in labor, time, and insurance make it a more cost-effective option in the long run. The company can build an entire 2,000-square-foot home in just one day with a small team of workers, drastically reducing the time and cost typically associated with home construction projects.

For example, in a new apartment complex in Palm Beach, Florida, 11 workers were able to construct the walls, floors, and ceilings of four buildings in just eight weeks—much faster than traditional methods would allow.

Durability for the Long Haul

The benefits of Renco’s technology extend far beyond cost savings. The homes built using these innovative composite bricks are designed to withstand the harshest conditions. The homes can endure winds up to 240 mph, making them incredibly resilient against hurricanes and tornadoes. Additionally, the material is more fire-resistant than both traditional brick and wood, and it is water-resistant, further reducing the risk of damage from floods or moisture buildup.

The homes are built to last, with a lifespan that reduces the need for frequent repairs and maintenance. The material does not rot, rust, or succumb to pest and termite damage, which leads to fewer maintenance costs and a longer-lasting structure. This durability is particularly important in a state like Florida, where severe storms and flooding are frequent, and in other regions like New York, California, and the Midwest—all prone to wildfires, tornadoes, or earthquakes. Renco’s homes offer peace of mind not only during extreme weather events but also throughout a home’s lifespan.

Transforming the Housing Industry

Experts in the field of sustainable construction view this as a significant shift in the industry. The ability to build homes that can withstand natural disasters faster, with more cost-efficient methods, could be key to addressing the housing crisis and providing long-lasting, safe shelters for communities at risk.

While there are some design limitations with Renco’s composite bricks—such as their blockier appearance—the structural and time-saving benefits far outweigh these drawbacks. As the construction industry adapts and embraces innovation, this new technology could reshape the way homes are built in disaster-prone areas, making them safer, more durable, and more affordable.
